JUNE: Minimalist Appreciation Month

01Jun10

Society’s environment has bombarded us with lots of information in regards to what to buy, right down to which retirement plan is best for you. You either get through it by not caring or suddenly get overwhelmed by it when you go to the grocery store and all you wanted to do is buy ice cream, but no— that aisle has 140 type of brands, all asking for your attention.

And if you’re particularly feeling pissed off that day, you get “systems overload”, you either buy the closest one to you or you end up buying fruit. If you’re the strong type, with the thought: “I came here for Hagen Daz and damn it, that’s what I’m buying,” and you actually accomplished that goal, then I say hooray for you.

Yes, millions of ads and promotions are all around us and their number one role is to compete for your attention and money. I’m not completely against it, because I understand why that happens and I’m probably one of those who helped put them out there… none-stop, might I add. [NOTE: some were design by committee 😉 but that’s another story]…

And complexity doesn’t stop there. There are some fashions/clothes that are overly done, ornate furnitures, over the top boutiques and even restaurants that intrude and freak out our minds.

But thank God for the Minimalists for their concept of simplicity in delivering uncomplicated media and uncluttered visual messages. They’re clean, chic, modern, fresh, elegant and straight to the point… Sometimes, an individual/consumer needs aesthetic. It gives them a sense of peace, a room in their minds to think and decide.

So this month I’d like to give praise and thanks to ALL the Art/Creative Directors out there who are pro-minimalist!

Starting with my hero and who was the greatest influence in my career: Mr. FABIEN BARON, the all around Creative Director, graphic/interior/product designer, painter and noted photographer.

I appreciate his simplified editorial layouts (bw photos w/ great typography application), clean lines and stark precision.

  1. Cool, you should definitely have the ” minimalism” coffee table book in your library and expand to Tadao Ando and John Pawson
